Have you ever been asked if you’re tired…when you aren’t? Do you feel like the dark circles under your eyes are causing you to look more rundown and/or drained? Well, at Beyond Aesthetics we want you to know that you have treatment options. Filler is a popular solution for tired eyes, but it’s not the only one. PRFM is a medical skin rejuvenation treatment that is quickly becoming a new favorite for treating areas of the face that are in need of a refresh.
What is PRFM?
PRFM stands for Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix. You may already be familiar with PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, which is a treatment that involves separating plasma from the patient’s own blood then using it as part of microneedling or injecting it back into the face or scalp. Plasma is like “liquid gold,” full of platelets, proteins and growth factors that promote tissue regeneration and repair. When it comes to improving the appearance of the skin, PRP provides benefits such as:
- Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Plumping the skin
- Improving the complexion
- Reducing the appearance of acne scars
PRFM takes what some patients call a “vampire facial” to the next level: it uses the same process as PRP but the patient’s blood is treated in a different manner so that the plasma thickens to become a fibrin matrix.
Benefits of PRFM
PRFM is more viscous than Platelet Rich Plasma and holds a higher concentration of platelets. This means that the complexion-boosting benefits of PRFM are even stronger than the original vampire facial, and it can be injected into specific areas of the face and body to help with cellular regeneration and stay localized to that treatment area. PRFM is so effective that it has been used by surgeons for years to speed healing and reduce postsurgical complications.1 PRFM is also more stable than its earlier counterpart, which means that the results are more pronounced and last longer.
Other benefits of PRFM include:
- A safe treatment with no risk of allergic reaction or vascular occlusion
- Safe for patients who may not be candidates for fillers
- No downtime
But How Can PRFM Benefit ME?
At Beyond | Aesthetics, we use PRFM most frequently on the face, and specifically under the eye hollows. Not only does this add volume to reduce the appearance of hollowness, but it can also improve under eye skin texture and pigment. Translation: PRFM can make your eyes look brighter, younger, and more refreshed.
We can also use PRFM to improve etched lines around the mouth, such as smile lines and nasolabial folds.
What is PRFM Treatment Like?
The first part of the PRFM treatment is a blood draw, so be sure to come in well-hydrated. Once your blood is drawn and the PRFM is prepared, your provider will cleanse the treatment area. The PRFM is injected with a cannula, which reduces the risk of bleeding and bruising and also helps us distribute the PRFM more evenly and in a more comfortable fashion.
After your PRFM treatment, you can expect your under eye area to be swollen. This can last for a few days: ice, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and supplements like arnica can all help resolve swelling more quickly. Most of our patients achieve their optimal results after three PRFM treatments, spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
